Michael L. Oelze
Michael L. Oelze received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Mississippi in 2000. He is an assistant professor in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and a full-time Beckman Institute faculty member in the Bioacoustics Research Laboratory. His fields of professional interest are ultrasound backscatter microscopy, quantitative ultrasound imaging, cancer diagnosis using ultrasound, treatment monitoring using ultrasound, bioeffects of ultrasound, sonoporation, and ultrasound computed tomography.
Honors and awards: NIH NRSA postdoctoral fellowship, (UIUC) and NIH NCI Individual NRSA Postdoctoral Fellowship.
Michael L. Oelze's research at the Beckman Institute deals with several aspects of ultrasound/tissue interaction including: cancer detection using quantitative ultrasound, ultrasound microscopy, bioeffects of ultrasound and ultrasound induced transfection. Professor Oelze has examined the effects of ultrasound on hemorrhaging of lung tissue. Dr. Oelze is also studying the use of very high frequency ultrasound for experiments in ultrasound backscatter microscopy. Using ultrasound backscatter microscopy, Dr. Oelze hopes to develop an ultrasonic means of detecting and quantifying apoptosis and necrosis of cells. Further, using ultrasound backscatter microscopy, Dr. Oelze is interested in developing a technique to map out tumor margins for skin cancer and alleviate some of the need for painful surgical procedures such as Mohs surgery (a specialized surgical treatment for skin cancer). Dr. Oelze has been exploring the effects of ultrasound and ultrasound contrast agents in the uptake of drugs and molecules into cells.
