Abstract |
The idea of using ultrasound for investigation of malignant diseases was first taken up systematically some 25 years ago by Wild and his colleagues (1) whose imaging equipment was designed to be capable of showing up details of soft tissues. Unfortunately this early work was discontinued and was superceded by technology that was deliberately aimed at demonstrating the outline anatomy of organ boundaries, at the expense of tissue detail. Whilst this approach seemed to be satisfactory for some investigations in obstetrics it was of little value in the field of cancer and work here was effectively dormant until the advent, in the past few years, of so-called "grey-scale imaging" (2,3). |

Abstract |
A workshop was sponsored by the NIH Radiation Study Section to discuss the use and future of ultrasound. The Study Section agreed that ultrasound will play an increasingly important role in diagnostic medicine and that this role must be supported by research in numerous aspects of this development. These include the basic mechanisms of the propagation and interaction of ultrasound in biological materials, the development of improved technological capabilities, and expanded clinical applications and evaluation of ultrasound methodologies. |

Abstract |
With ultrahigh-frequency sound waves and imaging techniques first devised for radar and sonar, it is now possible to explore structures within the human body painlessly, safely and at relatively low cost. |

Abstract |
Ultrasonic techniques are becoming increasingly important in medicine, both as a diagnostic tool and as a therapeutic modality. Although ultrasound has been used in medicine since the 1930's, it is only recently that these techniques have been widely used and their potential fully recognized. Medical ultrasonics is now in a period of rapid growth and is on the verge of making a significant impact on clinical medicine. The field provides challenging and important engineering problems, which are unique to medicine and biology. It is an open proving ground to many techniques developed for other applications and gives inspiration to the development of new technological advances. This review outlines some of the basic principles of ultrasonics, discusses the acoustical properties of biological tissues, provides a historical perspective of the use of ultrasound in medicine, describes ultrasonic techniques presently used in the clinic as well as those now under development, and reports on the standardization of medical ultrasonic procedures and measurements. |
